A Guide to Entrance Exams After Class 12 in India for 2027

Admission to most professional courses in India depends on an entrance exam taken after Class 12, and board marks alone cannot decide admission. Medical, engineering, architecture, and pharmacy programmes each rank applicants through a national or state-level test. Students completing Class 12 in 2027 therefore need to know which entrance exams suit their stream, when applications open, and what each exam requires. Missing a deadline or an eligibility rule can cost a full academic year. This guide covers NEET, JEE Main, JEE Advanced, and KEAM, along with other entrance exam options, their eligibility criteria, the courses they offer access to, and how to choose the right exam.

Major Entrance Exams for Medical and Engineering Courses

NEET, JEE Main, JEE Advanced, and KEAM are the exams most science students prepare for after Class 12. NEET leads to medical and allied courses, while the other three lead to engineering, architecture, and pharmacy programmes. The sections below give the purpose, expected schedule, and key details of each exam.

NEET UG

The National Eligibility cum Entrance Test is conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) for admission to MBBS, BDS, Ayurveda, Homoeopathy, and other medical and allied courses. The official 2027 schedule has not been released. The exam is expected in the first half of May 2027, with the notification likely around February 2027. Confirmed dates will appear on the NTA website.

JEE Main

The NTA conducts JEE Main for admission to engineering and architecture courses at NITs, IIITs and other centrally funded institutions. Students must also qualify through JEE Main to be eligible for JEE Advanced. The NTA has announced Session 1 for 22, 23, 24, 28, 29 and 30 January 2027, with 31 January as a buffer date. Session 2 is expected in April 2027.

JEE Advanced

JEE Advanced is the second stage and the gateway to admission at the Indian Institutes of Technology. One of the IITs conducts JEE Advanced each year on a rotating basis. IIT Delhi is expected to conduct the exam in May 2027. Candidates who rank among the top 2.5 lakh JEE Main qualifiers can register for JEE Advanced after the Session 2 results are announced.

KEAM

The Commissioner for Entrance Examinations (CEE), Kerala, conducts KEAM for admission to undergraduate engineering and pharmacy courses in the state. Architecture admissions are based on NATA scores. In Kerala, NEET UG scores are used for admission to medical and allied courses, and CEE Kerala handles the counselling process. The 2027 dates have not been announced, but applications usually open early in the year, and the exam is held around April.

Other Entrance Exams and Admission Options

Students who do not plan to take these exams have other routes. CUET UG is used for admission to central and many other universities, and NATA and JEE Main Paper 2 are used for architecture. NDA leads to careers in the armed forces, CLAT is the main exam for law, and UCEED is used for design programmes. Private universities conduct their own tests, including BITSAT, VITEEE, and SRMJEEE.

Eligibility Criteria for Entrance Exams in 2027

Eligibility rules vary by exam. Check the official bulletin for the exact requirements. The basic criteria for each exam are listed below.

  • NEET UG: Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and English, and a minimum age of 17 years by 31 December of the admission year. Minimum marks depend on the candidate's category.
  • JEE Main: Class 12 passed in 2025 or 2026, or appearing in 2027, with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics for BE and BTech. The exam can be attempted for three consecutive years. For admission to NITs and IIITs, you need 75 percent in Class 12 or a top 20 percentile rank in the board, with 65 percent for SC and ST candidates.
  • JEE Advanced: a rank within the JEE Main cut-off, with limits on attempts and age set by the organising IIT.
  • KEAM: Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics for engineering courses, plus the minimum marks given in the CEE prospectus.

Courses Students Can Choose After Qualifying

The courses open to a student depend on the exam in which they qualify. Each exam is linked to a specific group of programmes and institutions, so choice of exam shapes the options available later. The list below shows what each of the main exams leads to.

  • NEET UG: MBBS, BDS, Ayurveda, Homoeopathy, nursing and other allied health programmes.
  • JEE Main: BTech and BE programmes at NITs, IIITs and other institutions, with Paper 2 leading to BArch and BPlan.
  • JEE Advanced: Undergraduate programmes at the IITs, including BTech and dual degree options.
  • KEAM: Engineering, architecture and pharmacy courses in Kerala, with medical seats allotted through NEET UG scores.
  • Other exams: Students interested in law, design, or defence careers can take exams such as CLAT, UCEED, and NDA, while CUET UG is used for admission to a range of undergraduate degree courses.

How to Choose the Right Entrance Exam After Class 12

The right entrance exam depends on two factors: the course you want to study and the institutions you hope to join. Here is a look at the main entrance exams and the courses they cover.

NEET UG is the common national entrance test for MBBS, BDS, and AYUSH courses such as BAMS, BHMS, BUMS, and BSMS. It is also used for admission to veterinary and nursing programmes. Students can appear in any number of attempts as long as they meet the eligibility criteria.

JEE Main is the entrance test for BE/BTech admission to NITs, IIITs, and other centrally funded technical institutes. A separate paper covers B.Arch and B.Planning. A student can attempt JEE Main for three consecutive years, and it is conducted in two sessions each year.

JEE Advanced is the entrance exam for admission to the IITs. Only candidates who qualify in JEE Main can register for it, and candidates are allowed a maximum of two attempts in consecutive years.

KEAM, conducted by the Commissioner for Entrance Examinations (CEE) Kerala, is the entrance test for engineering and pharmacy courses within the state. Architecture applicants must also have a valid NATA score, while admission to medical and allied health courses in Kerala is based on NEET UG scores. Because KEAM and JEE Main both test Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics, many students prepare for the two together, though the question style and difficulty differ.

What to Check Before You Decide

Read the official information bulletin for each exam before you commit. Look at:

  • The syllabus and how closely it follows the Class 11 and 12 curriculum
  • Eligibility rules, including minimum marks in Class 12 and subject requirements
  • The exam pattern, marking scheme, and whether the test is computer-based
  • The number of attempts allowed
  • Your own strengths, since a teacher who knows your performance can help you judge where you are likely to do best

Plan Your 2027 Entrance Exam Preparation

Early planning makes a real difference after Class 12. JEE Main Session 1 is usually held in January, which gives engineering aspirants the shortest window to prepare. KEAM and NEET UG notifications generally follow in the first months of the year, and their application periods can overlap, so keep track of all the dates. Confirm the final schedules on the official websites, such as nta.nic.in and cee.kerala.gov.in, as soon as they are released.
